Santa Cruz, California, Seeks to Become "Hate-Free Zone"
This sun-kissed California surf town has got so much love, love, love that some residents want to outlaw hate. In July 1999 a group of activists launched a signature drive aimed at using the March 2000 ballot to declare Santa Cruz an official "hate free zone."
Consider some quotes from town residents and leaders:
* "What I hope is that when people from out of town come here, that they just chill."
* "Hate is like litter. Our city is a beautiful place to come, but leave your hate at the city limits and just enjoy yourself."
* "Yeah, I'm for it. I don't enjoy hate; I enjoy love."
Living in a "hate-free" fashion is a wonderfully high-minded idea. But, the church has a responsibility to teach, without apologies, that REAL love is only possible in its pure form if we, individually and corporately, stand in a right relationship with Christ.
