Bruce Schmidt, missionary in Uganda, tells about who he had been building a house is Kaabong. "We use home-made gravel. We hired villagers to bring big rocks and break them into gravel by hand. One morning 40 of these men came to talk. As a neighbor, I had to make time. As a foreigner, I was compelled by the fact that over half of them had AK-47s.

"We had set ... a fair price for the gravel. They let me know that it was not enough. For two hours they negotiated. We compromised. Then I said that I would like to tell them wy I really came [to Uganda]. We moved into the shade of a wild fig tree. They sat stiff with their guns propped up in the air.

"As I shared the gospel it was as if the Word of God melted their hardness. When the time of the invitation came, I asked who would say welcome to Jesus. They said, 'We all want to do that.' I replied, 'Maybe you didn't understand.' I repeated what it meant. Again they insisted.

"God added those 40 men to the Kingdom that day. They thought they were coming for money, but God gave them something far greater."

It was reported in May 1997 that some new believers among the hill tribes of Vietnam and Laos are selling their precious farm animals to purchase radios so they can listen to just one daily hour of gospel programming. Would we be willing to pay so great a price to hear the Word of God proclaimed?

"Society is composed of two great classes- those who have more dinners than appetite, and those who have more appetite than dinners." — Sébastien-Roch Nicolas de Chamfort (1741-94), French writer.

Yes, we are surrounded by people who are lacking food, as well as other basic needs—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

In late 1996, the U.N.'s Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) held a "World Food Summit" in order to discuss ways to meet the challenges of feeding the world.

The cost of the conference? Well over $10 million.

The FAO took a lot of heat over the Summit. Critics argued that the money should have been spent meeting hunger needs, not simply discussing them.

Could that same criticism be leveled at our churches? How much of our resources do we expend discussing the world's needs, and how much do we expend actually meeting those needs?
