From Aesop's Fables:
THE CHARCOAL-BURNER AND THE FULLER

A Charcoal-Burner carried on his trade in his own house. One day he met a friend, a Fuller, and entreated him to come and live with him, saying that they should be far better neighbors and that their housekeeping expenses would be lessened. The Fuller replied, “The arrangement is impossible as far as I am concerned, for whatever I should whiten, you would immediately blacken again with your charcoal.”

Aesop's moral: "Like will draw like."

[NOTE on the story: In ancient times, a Charcoal-Burner was one who made charcoal from cut wood, and a Fuller was one who worked cut cloth into material suitable for sewing.]

James 1:27 says: "Keep oneself unstained by the world." If we are not mindful of the potentially harmful effects which the world can have upon us, we might find that the negative influence of the world has negated all the positive work which the Lord has done upon us.

Similarly, a movie about a group of female bank robbers called "Set It Off," released in November 1996, has spawned numerous copycat crimes across the country since its release. One such bank robber, arrested in Ocala, FL, in June 1997, was just 16 years old.

Don't bother adjusting your TV. The problem seems to be the images piped out of Hollywood. That's the conclusion made by a study of 104 leading television writers and executives. Conducted by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, the study found that Hollywood's views run far from the mainstream of public opinion. Some examples:

  • Though 85 percent of Americans believe adultery is wrong, only 49 percent of TV writers and executives do.

  • Everyone else is less likely than Hollywood to say a woman has a right to an abortion (59 to 97 percent).

  • While only 4 percent of Americans have no religious affiliation, 45 percent of the TV writers and executives have none.
