Several years ago there was a television commercial in which an elderly women who had fallen in her home calls out: "I've fallen and I can't get up." For some reason, the commercial provoked a seemingly endless parade of jokes and laughter. Nevertheless, the much-quoted Mrs. Fletcher helped to make the public aware of disabled persons’ need to call for help when they are alone.

Amos 5:2 declares that Israel has "Fallen, no more to rise." If we allow sin to knock us down, there is always the chance that we won't have the ability—or the opportunity—to get up again.

In 1995, Christopher Reeve, the "Superman" actor, fell from a horse in a riding accident that severed his spinal cord and paralyzed him from the shoulders down. In the days that followed, both he and his mother considered pulling the plug on his life support system.

In his new memoir Still Me, which recounts how he battled back from the accident, Reeve said he first shared his thoughts with his wife, Dana. "I mouthed my first lucid words to her: 'Maybe we should let me go,'" he recalled.

But his wife, through tears, persuaded him to fight back, saying, "I want you to know that I will be with you for the long haul, no matter what. You're still you, and I love you."

Scott Blue didn't walk across the platform to receive his degree during the December 1998 commencement service at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Instead, he stood head and shoulders above his peers as he rolled his wheelchair down the aisle of the auditorium to receive his Master of Divinity degree.

Before graduating, Blue--a paraplegic from a car accident--garnered several other recognitions during his studies at Southern, including the "Outstanding Graduate" honor and a first-place award in the seminary's annual Clyde T. Francisco Preaching Award.

In an article in "The Tie," Norman Miller notes: "Blue is not known for his disability--he's known for his abilities."

Which are you focusing on: your disabilities or your abilities?

Donna Arthur writes:

"Hmmm....so....I think I have just found out the meaning of 'Murphy's Law'...

"I am just going into my third week of physical therapy for a pinched nerve in my neck...which has caused my left arm to be almost useless! This morning, my therapist said: "Ah...I think we are making some progress." I walked out of there feeling pretty good...

"Then about 5 miles down the road, a guy in a van hit us really hard from
behind. He bent down to grab a bottle that had rolled under his gas
pedal....and BANG! We got caught at the red light stuck between a tractor
trailer and him.

"So...it's back to the therapist in the morning.

"And...what can go wrong...usually does, doesn't it?"
