As criminals become bolder, living in a "good" neighborhood no longer means that one doesn't have to worry about crime. The brazen new tactics that criminals use mean that many of the "Old-School" ways of protecting oneself simply don't work any more. For instance… . . .

• "Carry your purse slung diagonally across your body"? No more: If you confront a really determined mugger, this strategy will only make it more likely that you'll not only get robbed but injured as well. Better to carry the bag under your arm like a football.

• "If a car rear-ends you, get out immediately, inspect the damage and exchange insurance info"? Very dangerous! A popular ploy among the new breed of robbers is to hit your car from behind—deliberately—then rob you when you get out. Better strategy: Drive to the nearest busy, well-lit area, or, if your car isn't drivable, stay inside until help arrives.

In an unsafe world, it's good to know that our ultimate, eternal safety is guaranteed by our heavenly Father.

When an adult eagle teaches its young to fly, it does not do so by ruthlessly casting the eaglet out of the nest; rather, it does so by girding up the young in its wings, and carrying it, so that the young bird will not fall on the rocks below and be injured or destroyed.

In the same way, the Lord's lovingkindness, strength, and protection have worked to protect us, and to keep us safe from the many dangers of the world about them, and to give us LIFE.

Wings

A small blue jay hopped through the grass, its nearly featherless wings flapping fruitlessly. Soon a full-grown blue jay landed by its side. The larger bird fed the little one then prodded it into a hedge where it would be protected from a cat that regularly patrolled the area.

The larger blue jay stayed within sight of the small bird and made regular visits to be by its side.

As I saw this scene unfolding, I thought of a Bible verse and God's promise to us: "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5).

"The devil is like a mad dog that is chained up. He is powerless to harm us when we are outside his reach, but once we enter his circle we expose ourselves again to injury or harm.

An article in National Geographic several years ago provided a penetrating picture of God's wings. After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree.

Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. When the blaze had arrived and the heat had singed her small body, the mother had remained steadfast. Because she had been willing to die, those under the cover of her wings would live.

Psalm 91:4: "He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler" (KJV).

There was a group of Botanists who were searching for a rare flower in the Himalayas. Upon finding the desired plant on the side of a steep cliff, they offered a bribe to a young boy if he would let them lower him over the cliff to retrieve the plant.

The young boy told the botanists to wait a few minutes and he ran home. He returned a little while later with an older man and said that, if they let his father hold onto the rope, he would permit them lower him over the side of the cliff.

So it ought to be with our Christian lives. As long as God has a hold onto the rope, we ought to faithfully follow his will for our lives with complete confidence that he will not let us go…

At sometime during World War II, A passenger ship set sail from Great Britian headed for port in New York City. The Captain of the ship being afraid of enemy vessels, sought the advise and guidance of the British Admiral. The Admiral calmly assured the captain that no matter what happens, he should be sure to sail his ship straight ahead. "Do not take any detours -- sail the ship straight ahead -- continue on-ward, heading straight towards the intended mark;" he said.

After several days of sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, which was surely filled with submarines and enemy vessels of all kinds, the Captain spotted an enemy destroyer off his forward bow. Nervously he grasped the handset and called for assistance. The calm voice replied, "Keep on Straight, Do not Detour, just sail the ship straight ahead. Everything will be just fine. Just keep on going - straight ahead."

After a couple more days the ship pulled safely into the great harbor of New York city. Shortly after docking, the great British battleship "Man-of-War" pulled into port behind the passenger vessel. The Captain realized that while he had not seen the British Battleship, she was there, standing by all the while, ready to come to his defense should it prove necessary.

So it is in our lives. God is standing by. We may not always see him there, but he is. Waiting. Bidding us onward toward the mark... Keep your ship on course. Keep on going - straight ahead…

At a dangerous front, the Army chaplain was conducting worship services. "I thank Thee, Lord," he prayed, "that Thine holy angels do surround us with their protection and love..."

Suddenly an artillery explosion was heard nearby. The chaplain paused in mid-sentence and raised his voice: "Is that OUTGOING or INCOMING?"

Together the soldiers answered: "OUTGOING, Sir."

"All right," said the chaplain, "now where was I? We thank Thee, Lord, that Thine holy angels..."
