A former shepherd described a peculiar way in which sheep operate. Apparently, you can hold up a 10-foot pole horizontally in front of a line of sheep. The lead sheep will jump over the pole, then another will follow, then another. Eventually, you can remove the pole, and the sheep will continue to jump over the spot where the pole used to be, blindly following those up front.

Jesus called us "sheep," and unfortunately that's what we are--for better and for worse. Often our human "traditions" are nothing more than acts of 'invisible pole jumping,' actions which have long been devoid of substantive meaning.
