There are several explanations for how the word "love" came to designate a zero score in tennis. The most plausible explanation is that in France, where tennis first became popular, the big round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg, and was therefore called an egg—which in French is "l'oeuf." When tennis became popular in America, Americans copied the French terminology but pronounced "l'oeuf" as "love."
"Love." This simple tennis term takes on new meaning when we consider its origin, doesn't it? Likewise, REAL love takes on new meaning when we consider ITS origin: "See what love the Father has given us! … God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him" (1 John 3:1, 4:9). The next time you say, "I love you," remember that genuine human love has as its origin the perfect love which God has shown us"
