When the clock struck midnight on Dec. 31, 1999, billions of people around the world celebrated the dawn of a new millennium--a year too early. The start of the new millennium was actually Jan. 1, 2001, and not the year 2000.

The confusion dates back almost 250 years with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. In additon to the doubts about "when," a controversy also exists about "where"-- the precise spot on the globe where the new 1000-year period dawns.

This confusion about the nature of time and seasons is a reminder of Jesus' warning that no one can know the hour or the day of His return. Our responsibility is not to "mark time," but to USE our time wisely in His name.

Are you spending your time each week on the things that truly matter? Here are a few questions to guide your thoughts on this matter…

• How much time did I spend with my children today? What did I do with them?
• Was I home for dinner?
• Did I do paperwork or other job-related tasks while my spouse bathed the kids, read to them, and put them to bed?
• Did I talk to my spouse today? ("Good morning," "What's for dinner?" and "What's on TV?" don't count!)
• How much time was frittered away watching TV?

A wise woman once said, "Parenthood is permanent, but childhood is temporary." Even though our children will be ours for a lifetime, the precious moments of their childhood fly by very quickly. Wise parents will rearrange their schedules to maximize the amount of time they can spend together with their young children.

"If you want to test your memory, try to remember what you were worrying about one year ago today."
_____

We are reminded that so much of the time we spend worrying is wasted time. Jesus taught, "Do not worry … but strive first for the kingdom of God" (Matthew 6:31,33).

Years ago the great contralto, Marian Anderson, gave a concert in a small Nebraska college town. It was the musical high spot of the semester.

After the concert Anderson returned to the hotel and approached the front desk. She asked the young girl behind the desk if she had attended the concert.

The girl, a student, explained to the great artist how her job kept her from attending, and related her deep disappointment in not being able to hear the performance.

Without hesitation, the world-renowned singer stood in the hotel lobby and sang unaccompanied for the young college student for a few wonderful moments.

We are reminded that Jesus, too, found time to minister to just one person at a time. In our churches' quest for bigger crowds and bigger numbers, are we willing to give of ourselves for just a few—or even just one?

Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening, the bank deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course!!!!

Each of us has such a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow". You must live in the present on today's deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and success! The clock is running. Make the most of today.
