Sheryl D. Giesbrecht wrote about the need for families to take vacations. Her words are specifically geared toward ministry families, but are applicable to any family in which one member works at a job which can potentially demand all of one's time.

She notes that getting away with the family--even for only a day--can help you thrive in the responsibilities which God has given you.

Her formula for happiness in the family is:

R / R = R

That is, Routine divided by Respite equals Renewal.

Some tips?

1. Schedule your vacations--and guard that time just as you would an important meeting.
2. Plan your outings--and include every family member in the planning process.
3. Protect your time--not just during vacation week but always. Every family needs quality "play time" in order to thrive.
