Dads have always known how to handle cars they taught us, and we'll pass the wisdom on to our kids. But times change, and so do cars. There are a few old automobile adages that are no longer true:

"Let the car warm up for a few minutes before driving." Not anymore. Cars that have fuel- injected engines rather than carburetors should be driven immediately after start-up, to save gas and reduce emissions.

"Get your car rustproofed or it'll rust out in five years." In the last 10 years, carmakers have installed extensive rust protection. Additional rustproofing won't help and can actually damage your car!

"Buy premium gas. It'll run better and give you more power." If your car owner's manual says to use regular unleaded, that's exactly what you need to use. Even if your car knocks and pings on acceleration, a single tankful of mid-grade not premium should cure the problem.

Old ideas die hard yet we must constantly check our fabled notions against reality. In our Christian walk, we should constantly check our personal ideas about the life of faith against the reality of Scripture.

Experience will either make you better … or bitter.

"Writing about the spiritual life is like making prints from negatives … Often it is the dark forest that makes us speak about the open field. Frequently prison makes us think about freedom, hunger helps us to appreciate food, and war gives us words for peace. Not seldom are our visions of the future born out of the sufferings of the present and our hope for others born out of our own despair. Only few “happy endings” make us happy, but often someone’s careful and honest articulation of the ambiguities, uncertainties, and painful conditions of life give us new hope. The paradox is indeed that new life is born out of the pains of the old."
