The zeal of the Lord burned with such fervent heat in the heart of James Chalmers of New Guinea, that for well night a quarter of a century, he labored among the cannibals of the South Sea Islands with undying zeal and devotion, until at last he joined the Noble Army of Martyrs. After spending 21 years in New Guinea, he was heard to say to an immense gathering of people in the Old Exeter Hall:
"Recall the 21 years; give me back all its experiences, give me back its shipwrecks, give me its standing in the face of death, give it me surrounded by savages with spear and club, give it me with spears flying around me, with the club knocking me to the ground; give me it back, and I will still be your missionary."
It was same this fire which also consumed the Rev. R. Murray McCheyne of Dundee at the age of 29. He labored, wept, and prayed for his people before God until He sent a sweeping revival which meant the ingathering of multitudes of precious souls into the Kingdom. In his last illness, and when delirious he was heard to pray:
"This parish, Lord, this people, this whole place."
